Door with Mackintosh roses

Door with Mackintosh roses

After visiting our atelier in Bolsena several times, Marta and Pierluigi decided to commission a door with Mackintosh roses for their beautiful home in Rome, eager to add a distinctive touch to their living space. Let’s dive into the story behind this masterpiece and discover how it transformed their home!

The Inspiration: Charles Rennie Mackintosh

Before unveiling the door itself, let’s take a moment to appreciate its inspiration. Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a Scottish architect, designer, and painter born in Glasgow in 1868 and passing away in London in 1928, is celebrated as one of the leading figures of Art Nouveau in the UK and a cornerstone of the Glasgow Movement. His remarkable ability to blend art and architecture resulted in creations imbued with elegance and originality, often featuring graceful floral patterns, such as the iconic roses bearing his name. These roses have captivated art enthusiasts for generations, so it’s no surprise that Marta and Pierluigi fell in love with them for their home.

The Art of Glass: Bringing the Roses to Life

For this Mackintosh Rose door, we paid particular attention to the interplay of light and shadow created by the varying tones of the petals. We used an antique sheet of hand-blown glass, distinguished by its extraordinary colour gradient, ranging from deep orange to vivid vermilion red. This glass not only enriches the artwork visually but also creates a dynamic effect, turning light into a living, pulsating work of art.

The delicate leaves, elegant borders, and lower circular motifs, also crafted from hand-blown glass, complete the symphony of colours, while the background features light yellow cathedral glass. This element adds brightness and warmth to the entire composition, making every detail even more vibrant.

Door with Mackintosh roses: A Transformative Touch

When we personally installed the Mackintosh Rose door in Marta and Pierluigi’s home in Rome, the impact was immediate. The play of light through the coloured glass breathed new life into their living room. Our clients were thrilled to see how this single element could so profoundly enhance their space, turning a simple door into a unique and refined feature.

Timeless Beauty

While aesthetics are crucial, durability is equally important for a functional door. We reinforced the artistic glass panel with a classic technique, adding a 6mm horizontal iron bar hidden beneath a lead profile of the same thickness. This clever addition prevents the glass from warping over time due to the movement of the door.
