The choice of glass
While the classical style with figurative, floral or ornamental subjects often required large areas of detailed painted glass, with the modern style paint is less predominant, sometimes it is reduced to a wash on the glass, often doesn’t even exist. Therefore, the choice of glass, the color, but above all the textures become very important for modern and contemporary stained glass. On the market we can find glass with different textures and transparencies. Mouth blown glass is almost transparent with the characteristic small bubbles and streaks created during blowing process. Industrial made glass offers several different textures or patterns. The most common is called cathedral glass with a typical frosted more or less strong. An example is this leaded glass created for a sliding door using colorless glass with different textures.
Glass painting effects
Glass painting in modern and contemporary stained glass is less realistic than in the past, the style is innovative, abstract and therefore glass painting fits the new style. Pigments are often applied to the glass to achieve opacity, trying to find a way to create the weirdest effect or a really interesting texture. In this time we are learning the silkscreen printing on glass using our traditional pigment. Silkscreen printing or know also as serigraphy is a sophisticated stenciling technique for printing on any surface.
