She finally took the opportunity offered by a long summer vacation to flee the tropical heat of Uruguay to take refuge in the Umbrian winter, and learn the art of hand painted stained glass.
With over 23 hours of travel (door-to-door), Laura received a warm welcome on her arrival. It was her first ever visit to Italy and we were honoured to learn, this was the first time she’d taken a vacation course. What’s more, Laura is not the biggest fan of hot weather, and Umbria treated her to a brief snow fall, and seeing snow was also a first for her too.
I’m used to teaching in both English and Italian, but Laura was from Spanish speaking Uruguay. I was initially a bit worried about communication, but fortunately Laura had learned a little Italian at school, and with a mixture of Spanish, Italian and plenty of hand gestures, communication posed no problem whatsoever.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”8011″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”8003″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” onclick=”img_link_large”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”7999″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center” onclick=”custom_link”][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The first project Laura took on was to reproduce a flower in the classic Gothic style. It was a simple project that enabled her to practice designing cut-lines, glass cutting and some of the basics of painting. The second project was the ambitious copy of a detail of a stained glass window entitled The Wind, by contemporary artist Sylvia Laks, someone for whom I have enormous admiration, and who lives and works in Costa Rica.

With the flower completed, Laura engaged with the second project excellently, showing skill in the complicated task of painting her first face on glass. Between kiln firings and in her spare spare time Laura also created a small detailed work, painting a female snow leopard on glass, with crystal blue eyes.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_single_image image=”8007″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/3″][vc_column_text]Recently, I wrote on our Facebook Course Page the phrase “They come as students, they leave as friends,” and so it was with Laura.
